This website on Steve's blog is so useful, so i copy it on my blog to remind me whenever i forget or need to review. My memory is not good. Do this exercise later or i will get up late tomorrow.

Final introduction of my essay

Essay Question:

‘Television is in no way a true mirror of society.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Introduction:

‘Television is a new medium. It's called a medium because nothing is well-done’- Fred Allen – the famous American comedian – said in 1950. His perceptive insight view still remains the whole value and explains why television as playing a certain role in each household nowadays has been adapting to digital era. The era is of the dramatically development of extra channels on television at the forefront of digital broadcasting. Everyone can find huge information of every field, attain higher education of every subject and get knowledge of society outside the world through those various channels. Television reflects the growing complexity of modern life about the different lifestyles, the challenges families as well as individual face. Someone’s life on television could present for their lives, for either our lives or one class in society. We know a real world in the manner that is both experience in our lives and looking at something through television programmes. Obviously, everything about social values from micro angle to macro one is reflected on television. This leads to a question whether realities of life people watch on television is true or not. This essay critically examines how far we can believe on what we watch and which aspects of society is mirrored on television honestly. It is very useful for our point of view to consider, solve an issue in the real life in which it is a little bit different from life on television before making a right decision carefully.

Lecture: Free Business and Economic System

I don't listen lecture for a long time because of many reasons. So i try to take note another chappter of internet lesson today. Basically, i understand it widely in the way i had read from a book before but my knowledge is not deeply. That is why i should read more on my subject, but i think many books connected to business is difficult to choose the best one. Finally i think i will search something what i don't understand.

This is my note-taking of this lesson:

1. Business: Definition

- organized effort of individual and organisation.

- to produce and sell product--> profit

(profit is so important for enterprise to do business and for shareholder, customer)

2. Fundamental Business Resources:

- Human resource

- Information resources: know partner, customer

- Material resource(for manufacturing)

- Financial resource

--> Businesses must combine aff 4 resources to produce goods and supply service

3. Economic system: society's rules: allocating its resources--> produce, distribute goods and service for consumption.

- Impacts economic growth and development.

- Different society as different approach.

4. Types of economic system:

- Communism: everyone have the same benefit, without differrent classes

- Socialism: distribute based on needs, reallocate resources, get higher tax to provide social programme. Everyone don't have high income individually because they work hard, they pay more tax.

- Capitalism: business really sastisfy, don't react well, have a lot of mechandise of goods

5. Key feature of US 'Free Enterprise' system:

System of business in which individual are free to produce, sell

- Customer freedomm of choice

- Private ownership of land and real property

- Competition: among business for the customer's dollar

- Supply and demand: determined by customers'demand

ex: my money is my choice, can get and decide, but careful in terms of procedure. It doesn't work well bu law.

- Circular flow: of money for labour, resource and capital exchang

- Business cycles: driven by growth and contraction--> profit motives for reinvestment

6. Circular Flow of resource in ' Free Economics' system:

I have drawn a diagram on this section (circular flow), but i don't know why i can't copy and paste here.:-(
First disadvantage of this website i found.

7. Types of competition:
Competition - the rivalry mong businesses for sales to potential customer

- Pure competition: many sellers and buyers--> must accept going price

- Monopolistic competition: many buyers, large sellers--> buyers compete with product differences.

- Oligopoly: few Seller--> each Seller consider price control

- Monopoly: only 1 seller--> buyer complete control overprice

+ Natural monopoly: require huge capital

+ Legal monopoly: with partner, copyright or trademark (but a lot od money on design, advertisment)

Short video clip about USA economy:

USA 's business: Function of value production: you can compete in global world.

Expenditure is changing: 95% world population outside USA, a lot of people dirnk a alcohol because some companies oversea increase their profit by cheap row material (not available in their countries) or they adapt new technology.

A company has 2: comparetive advantages, absolutely advantages, for example, Brazil has advantage of producing coffee, South Afria has advantage of dimond.

Technology can do product better in quality, cheaper in price. Marketing is a key effect on brandname.

‘Television is in no way a true mirror of society.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement?

It is generally agreed that television as playing a certain role in each household nowadays has been adapting to digital era. Everyone can find huge information of every field, attain higher education of every subject and get knowledge of society outside the world by watching television on those various channels. Example of an essay introduction1

Essay Question: Italy on the eve of 1860 has often been described as an unlikely nation. Why?

On the eve of 1860 the word Italy described not a nation, but a geographical area. The peninsula was split into eight separate states, all independent of one another. Economically, while the whole of Europe seemed to be surging ahead, Italy was lagging behind. At this time, Italy was seen as an unlikely nation because of the many obstacles that lay in the way of unification. The main obstacles were the dislike and distrust between the states and the "slowness of the great bulk of Italians to accept or even comprehend the idea of Italy" (Mack Smith,1968: 2). There was also a lack of planning and common goals amongst the minority of the population that supported and were prepared to fight for a unified country. This was exacerbated by the disagreement and dislike between the leaders of Il Risorgimento, the Italian independence movement.

Improve my weakness: Phrasal verb

Fill in the gaps with the correct form of the phrasal verbs below:

Dave's a funny chap! He never wants to go out in the evenings, but when he does, he never wants to go home again!

Last Thursday was a typical example. I phoned him and asked if he wanted to go out to our local pub for a quick drink. At first, he said that he didn't want to - he would rather--stay in --- and watch the telly. But after about 10 minutes, I managed to persuade him to come to the pub.

Well, we had a nice evening, and the 'quick drink' turned into a longer drink; the more Dave and I drank, the more we wanted to drink. The pub closed at 11 o'clock, so we had to drink up then, but Dave wanted to ---stay out----- and persuaded me that we should go to the nightclub in town to continue our 'conversation'. There weren't many people in the nightclub, but that didn't stop us from having a good time! I finally ---got back-- home at 5 o'clock in the morning, feeling very happy, tired, and drunk.

The way my head felt on Friday morning (or, to be more accurate, Friday afternoon!), I had to agree with our friends who say that Dave and I are a bad influence on each other!

go out / stay out / stay in / drink up / get back

My score is only 2/5. So sad, so i think i will do more exercise on it.

Improve my weakness: Verb Pattern

I surprise how correct i did on this exercise:25/25. I think it is because of a very low level of exercise. So i try it on higher level:

Yes, i am right. My score is 4/6 now. Here are 2 my wrong sentences:

1 I don't mind making as long as the roads aren't too busy.
2 My parents always made me drive my bed in the morning.

--> The answer is:

1. driving

2. make

Here is my wrong answer: i chose A, but the right answer is C: happened. I still don't know why.
5.
She ____________ to see him in the car park.
A
remembered
B
could succeed
C
happened
D
doesn't forget

8.
The girl ____________ to do it.
A
can't help
B
stopped
C
doesn't feel like
D
saw him

I chose D, but the answer is C. So my score is 6/8

12. I want (learn) (fly) an airplane.

--> to learn flying, but the right answer is to learn to fly

So my score is 19/20

This is very dificult level. My score is 16/19. Here are my mistake:
1) Sorry, I forgot (buy) some milk. --> buying ---> to buy
5) Would you mind (I / close) the window? --> i close--> me closing
7) This soup doesn’t taste right yet. - Try (put) in a bit more salt. --> to put--> putting

The right answer is in bold.

My course, Steve 's homwork

I have looked at my course again to find something new. I surprise my tuition fee to be increased dramatically. Fortunately i will study in Moorgate where is near my house now and i also went there several times.

I am still reading 'The Economics of Business Enterprise'- Martin Rickettts which i borrowed from library. (You can also read online by clicking that link) It is connected to my subject and known from Londonmet's email in which they suggest reading before entering Master course.

Regarding to diagnostic grammar test, I decided 3 my weakness i will focus on this week:
- Verb pattern
- Fill in the gap in small paragraph
- Meaning of phrasal verb

I am answering Steve's questions of this grammar test:

-Which of the grammar points you have problems with are more important for a) writing b) speaking c) both?
--> My speaking is weaker than my writing.

-Do you think that doing lots and lots of grammar exercises is the best way to improve your grammar?

--> It is the best way to improve grammar but it is not enough. I think i should highlight, remember where my mistake is from grammar exercise and make another right sentence using that grammar which i focus on.

-Can you think of any other activities that you could do without having to pick up a grammar book?

--> Exercise on internet is the most convenience book to improve grammar. However i prefer the game of grammar or visual grammar to written grammar.

-How do you think you've learnt the grammar you already know well?

--> My problem is how long i remember what i 've learnt. I think i should review what i already know when i find difficult to use it as much as possible. Therefore my brain works too much to remember for a long time.

-Can you find some online exercises to help you with your grammar weaknesses. Please put a link to anything you find, then do the exercise, and paste into your blog any sentences/phrases you got wrong or would like to remember.

-->

Verb pattern with answer.
